Some time ago I was given a giftcard to Wal*Mart. Now I don't know about you but I have a hard time deciding what to buy with such a gift. So I have a little wish list tucked away for occasions such as this.
While shopping one day in the garden centre I decided to pick out some bird seed. I have a feeder that hangs off our back deck and in the past I haven't had very much activity. So I thought I'd buy some feed that catered to songbirds and maybe the traffic would pick up.
That was about a month ago and I've certainly seen quite a few more birds stopping by for a snack. But today was the jackpot! While sitting at the dining room table I looked outside at the feeder to see a blackbird with what looked to be an injured wing. As I took a closer look, the bird quickly took flight. But not before I caught sight of his multicolored wings as he flew away. I began searching on the computer for what type of bird it could be. (Remember, I am quite a novice at birdwatching.)
Come to find out, what I mistook for an injured bird was none else than a Redwing Blackbird. I haven't been able to snap my own photo but am anxiously awaiting his return so I can. Here's one I found...
Minutes later while watching for his return, another new visitor arrived which I found out to be a Rose Breasted Grosbeak.
Now I was curious about the type of seed I had purchased so I picked up the bag and began to read just what kind of birds would be attracted. Lo and behold, there on the package was a huge picture of a Rose Breasted Grosbeak! I had to laugh! I began to call to my husband, "It worked! It worked!"
We spent the next few minutes watching our friend through the binoculars until he decided he should move on. What fun we had watching and listening to our new feather friends.
Blessings,
Jessica

Those are nice pictures. We have a yard covered, I mean literally covered with the first bird each year when they are migrating. It is funny to watch our cat as he sits on the porch, like he is too stunned to move. They look very pretty when there are so many of them.
What beautiful visitors! We love bird watching, too. Have a wonderful long weekend!
